Plants take about 3 wks in cold weather to perk up
These wonderful strawberry plants come alive in about three weeks in 50 degree weather. (try to put 'em in EARLY so they bear well the very first year)Hirt's terrific greenhouse is a little too far away, so I buy from them online.Plants are shipped in great packaging to prevent drying out. The strawberries are shipped dormant and bare-rooted, so don't be alarmed when they look totally dead, that's how they should look!Soak in water for a few minutes, and carefully plant so the crown is just above soil line, water in well, they'll perk up in just a couple weeks, (sooner if it's warmer outside) and give you terrific strawberries the first year! This greenhouse has the best selection of tomatoes, peppers and flowers I have seen. Some VERY rare and unusual things to try!Thank goodness they sell here, so everybody can now buy from them, no matter where we are!!

Strong, healthy plants!
I had never grown strawberries before but I thought I'd give it a shot this year. I quickly received these strawberry plants but didn't have the time to plant them right away, so I placed the plants in a jug with their roots in water. About a week or so later I had purchased a pretty little strawberry planter pot (not necessary for planting the berries but was just something I had wanted) and I moved the plants into their new home with some good dirt. They've been growing very well every since. I have made sure to keep them watered every day because they're blasted by sun all day on our deck. It's still too early in the season to have fruit but I can tell that I'm going to get a good little yield off of them! There are lots of flowers on each plant. (See the photos that I've uploaded.)I can't wait to taste the first fruit that comes off of these!

Nice!
These arrived as a big brown dry bundle of roots held together by two rubber bands - no leaves at all. I was a bit worried. Put them as received in a vase with water submerging the exposed roots, keeping the rest above water. Within 2 days, leaves started to form. Planted them outside a week ago and they grow like crazy now. All 25 survived. No issues. Great price for 25 (actually 26) plants.

Got berries like crazy
I purchased these berry plants at the beginning of May. They soon arrived, dormant, wrapped in newspaper and not looking like much. But thanks to a previous review, I knew to put the roots in water right away. Three days later on May 15, I was ready to plant them into my Topsy Turvey planter, which I have hanging from our garage, since the pool, cement and dogs means there's no place to plant in the ground. Plus, I'd tried berries in the front yard a couple years prior, but dealing with weeds and bugs was a pain. I harvested my first berries on June 14th...surprising friends on Facebook who were amazed that I had berries so quickly. My plants are growing like crazy and I have a handful of tasty berries every day now...just 6 weeks after planting. I used Miracle Grow water retaining potting soil and also sprinkled some Miracle Grow water soluble plant food...a little into each layer as I inserted the plants...putting it just ABOVE the roots. Thankfully, rain nearly every day, as well...

Excellent results
The negative reviews made ma a little wary. I have to agree the plants looked near death on arrival. There were no green leaves on any of the root stock... for the first 24 hours. 49 of the 52 plants were thriving after 48 hours. (One blew away in the wind and we never found it again.) I chose to follow the advise from a review that said to soak the plants even though the instructions say not to. I covered them with water and an ounce of VF11 liquid fertilizer. My ground was prepared before the plants arrived with a small amount of chicken composted manure and top soil in a raised bed. The raised bed was covered with weed block and holes were cut for the plants every 12 to 14 inches. The soil was kept moist but not saturated. The temperature here is in the 60's and 70's day and night.

great success rate only four days in the ground
50 bare root delivered May 25 & planted May 26 here in Oregon. Today is May 30 and clearly there is growth. Very exciting. I'd say 1 in 5 appear to be doing nothing. Out of an order of 50 that's about 10 plants not showing signs of life like the others. However, after only 4, REPEAT FOUR days in our warm rain weather they have burst to life ... positive sign. As for delivery, they were shipped well packaged and arrived early.

I had my doubts
When my strawberry plants arrived, I took one look at them and thought, these are dead. Due to the weather, I couldn't plant them so stored them in my fridge for a couple of weeks. I still thought they were probably dead. I soaked them in water over night and planted them. The next day we had a sand storm so I figured I could kiss them good by. These are some tough strawberries! As of today, 90% are doing great and I have high hopes for the others. I highly recommend getting your gardening plants from Hirts thru Amazon.

Looks Beautiful
This is a great item. I bought starter plants from the local garden center and inserted them into the planter with some organic soil. The only mistake that I made was that I used garden soil, and you really need to use potting soil for this planter. I have it hanging on my porch and it looks absolutely beautiful. I planted my strawberries a couple weeks ago and they are doing well so far. I do not have any strawberries yet but I expect this plant to do well. I have been told that it is impossible to plant strawberries in the ground in my area because the strawberries get eaten up by bugs. I have not had any bug problems with this planter so far. One minor drawl back is that it is easy to damage the roots when inserting the plants into the planter. I think this problem could be improved with a better design.

Product Description

The Topsy Turvy Strawberry Planter is the most brilliant new invention ever for growing fresh strawberries. Because the ingenious Topsy Turvy is upside down, gravity naturally causes the water and nutrients to pour directly and freely down from the root to the fruit and each port hold 2 plants for even bigger yield! Simply place any strawberry or herb plant in the Topsy Turvy, add favorite potting soil, hang it up and then water. Sun warms the plant like a greenhouse, the root system explodes and thrives inside the planter. Plus, hanging in the air eliminates any ground fungus, harmful bacteria, cutworm damage - no need for pesticides, digging, weeding and makes berry picking easy. Can also grow herbs like parsley, oregano, basil, rosemary, mint and more. Top to learn more

Not a no-brainer setup, but good results once you address the risks.
First, what's in the box. You get the planter itself (which includes a three-wire hanging system with a swiveling hook attachment at the junction), a plastic cap that covers the top of the planter, a small sheet of instructions, and a reasonably heavy duty screw-in hook that you're to screw into the awning of your house. And....that's it. To this, you need to add potting soil, fertilizer and plants. The advertising and general presentation of this item makes it seem so simple: Fill it with potting soil, add plants, hang, water, wait for berries to appear and enjoy. Like countless others I fell for that. I bought this item as a treat for my three year old daughter, so she could gain the experience of watching plants grow and strawberries appear.I followed the instructions verbatim, using Miracle Grow potting soil and plant food, measured to the correct proportions. I bought 30 strawberry plants from a local greenhouse. I inserted two plants per hole, filling it...

Plants in good shape...
I ordered these to plant them in my back yard as well as in containers. They arrived promptly (great fast shipping at Hirt's) and in good shape. Slightly overwatered, so well prepared for the travel. The plants are in their individual containers, and each of them has 4-10 leaves, about 2-3 inches plant size. I'm happy with these plants, I hope they will grow well in the spot where I put them. Was about to give 4 stars but wasn't sure why to go below 5.

Plants arrived in poor shape, several died
I live in an area which doesn't get a great deal of sunlight, so I was excited to try the Alpine Strawberry which, according to my research, does well in partly-shady areas and container gardens. The plants arrived surprisingly quickly after my order, which was filled and shipped right away. The grower packs the plants by covering the mini pots with tape, throwing them in a very oversized box, then filling the box with styrofoam peanuts. There were no holders for the pots, no plastic lids. When I got my plans, several of the pots were on their side or upside down in the box.The plants were tiny. I was expecting the type of starter plant that you would receive from a local nursery. These were very, very young. Most of the plants only had a few leaves, and were no more than 1/2" to 3/4" high. The plants were well watered, but of the eight that arrived only four looked like they were in decent shape. Per the instructions, I watered them and hardened them...
