Worked like a charm
Our daughter used these for a school science project. They were shipped overnight with an ice pack in the box so there was no question about freshness. She swabbed some samples onto the trays and set them out on the furnace in our laundry room and within a couple of days she had quite a population of bacteria. We will definatly buy this product again if we ever need it.

Ready to go Petri dish - don't have to mix up your own nutrient agar
This is a set of 10 Petri dishes which come with pre-poured nutrient agar. For those of you who are culturing micro-organisms for the first time, a Petri dish itself is just a plastic (or less often, glass) dish with a cover on it. Organisms won't grow in it unless food is provided for them in the dish. Most commonly this is done with "nutrient agar" which is (as you might imagine) a mixture of nutrients and agar that comes in a powder form. The powder is mixed with water and the mixture is heated up until the powder has dissolved into the water; the hot liquid is then poured into the Petri dishes and allowed to cool before use. This set of Petri dishes already has had all of that done for you so all you need to do is put the micro organisms in and wait for them to grow. It's very convenient but there is extra cost because of this. I was quite pleased with the dishes I received; they were well-packaged, free of contamination, and most definitely ready to go. The...

Product Description

What is inside the package:
1) 10 Pre-poured LB-agar plates (100 x 15 mm Petri Dish)
2) 10 sterile swabs (in 5 pouches)

Storage condition and shelf life:
Store agar plates at 4 oC refrigerator with a shelf-life of up to 30 days.

Instructions:
LB-agar plates contain a yellowsih nutrient agar layer in the bottom half of a Petri dish. This yellowish layer is used to culture bacteria and other micro-organisms.
Sterile swabs are used to pick up bacteria and seed them on to the agar plates.
After the plates are swabbed, the plates should be incubated at 37 oC for optimal bacterial growth. Normally 24 hr incubation should be enough to see the appearance of bacterial colonies. Incubation at 25 oC or room temperature should take considerable longer time (2 to 3 days) to see bacterial colonies.

Notice:
1) The plates should be placed in an upside down position to prevent water condensation.
2) The plates should be placed in a closed box (NOT sealed) to minimize the chance of contamination.
3) The experiment should be terminated after 5 days. Prolonged incubation is strongly discouraged due to possible contamination in a non-sterile environment.

Petri Dishes for Second Grade Experiment on Germs
I ordered the petri dishes for my second graders unit on Germs. They worked beautifully. In the past, I would make a solution with agar, but it took a long time and it was a hassle. These dishes and swabs were perfect for our experiment. The students loved it and learned a lot about germs being everywhere - even in our classroom.

Perfect for what I needed.
The plates came in secure packaging. Nice clear agar, no contams whatsoever. After collecting my samples and finishing my research, I was able to autoclave the petri dishes and reuse them.

Works Great!
This item was very useful for my science fair project. It takes some patience to see visible bacteria though. I would not recommend this for children under 8.

Great Product
I was very happy with the product and I was able to use it for its purpose. However one of the items that was sent to me was cracked and since I was short on time I was not able to return. I was very disappointed that one of the dishes was cracked but overall I made it work.

Clinical Findings P aeruginosa can cause infections virtually anywhere in the body, but urinary tract infections, pneumonia (especially in cystic fibrosis patients), and wound infections (especially burns) predominate. In the laboratory, these pigments diffuse into the agar, imparting a blue-green color that is useful in identification. Pseudomonads are able to grow in water containing only traces of nutrients, eg, tap water, and this favors their persistence in the hospital environment. P aeruginosa is primarily an opportunistic pathogen that causes infections in hospitalized patients, eg, those with extensive burns, in whom the skin host defenses are destroyed. and (2) pyoverdin (fluorescein), a yellow-green pigment that fluoresces under ultraviolet light, a property that can be used in the early detection of skin infection in burn patients. P aeruginosa produces two pigments useful in clinical and laboratory diagnosis: (1) pyocyanin, which can color the pus in a wound blue. P aeruginosa produces exotoxin A, which inhibits eukaryotic protein synthesis by the same mechanism as diphtheria exotoxin, namely ADP ribosylation of elongation factor 2. Corneal infections caused by P aeruginosa are seen in contact lens users. Strains of P aeruginosa isolated from cystic fibrosis patients have a prominent slime layer (glycocalyx), which gives their colonies a very mucoid appearance. Because they do not ferment glucose, they are called “nonfermenters,” in contrast to the members of the Enterobacteriaceae, which do ferment glucose.
