These MREs tied for First in my Taste Test
Over the past few months I have become interested in disaster preparedness, especially since the blizzard of 09. As a result I went online and ordered a number of half cases of MREs to try with my family in the interest of determining which brands that I should purchase. To do this I had all three members of my family taste each entrée and rate it on a four point scale: Check plus - very good, Check -acceptable to good, Check minus - I'd eat it, and X - I'd rather starve.I also had everyone rate the general quality of the MRE on the same scale. This includes the raw amount of food, the overall quality of the side dishes (if any) and the sides, and the overall taste of the sides and snacks. After eating MREs for the entire New Year's three day weekend these Sopacs tied for first place with the A-Packs. (There was one MRE that did better then both of these, but they are almost impossible to find and are expensive because shipping is not included...

Viva La Difference!
As I was leaving the Army, they were introducing Meals: Ready-to-Eat, which were replacing the venerable C Rations that were packed in tins of which many of the discarded ones were used by the enemy in Vietnam to send back to our soldiers as shrapnel. We were told that the MRE's were taste-tested by soldiers, and were lighter than the tin contents of C-Rations. You can imagine my shock as I stood out in a frozen wasteland, and tried my first packet. If you ever heard the expression, "I would rather starve than eat this!" that is what everyone in the tent heard me say. Soon dubbed, Meals Rejected by Ethiopians, the MRE's made us question the taste buds of the soldiers who had supposedly given this disgusting kludge a thumbs-up.Now flash forward to present day.One reservist brought a box into one of our classes, and I was offered whatever I wanted. I marvelled at the choices. Gone were franks and beans cooked in their own juices, fruit cake and peanut...

MRE's (Meals Ready To Eat)
I'm a backpacker/bike rider who loves to go deep into the wilds with my mountain bike, and these meals are okay for that. With a shelf life, in cool dry conditions, of about ten years means it is the best to keep around for all emergencies and your camping needs. But I would eat them up about every five years or so and then replace them just to be on the safe side. They typically provide utensils, salt and pepper and even coffee or tea packet. Oh yes, even matches. They do vary to some degree on these items, but that is the average contents. The food packets are typically a few of the following:Beef EnchiladaCajun Rice w/Beans and SausageCheese Omelet w/VegetablesChili MacaroniMeatloafSpaghetti w/Meat SauceBeef StroganoffBeef StewBBQ Chicken with Black Beans and PotatoesChicken Noodle StewCheese TortelliniVegetarian Chili with...

Good Stuff
I guess that I was not really expecting the real MREs. To my surprise these are the real deal. In the original military box. I am very pleased with my purchase. Thanks for the real deal. And thanks Amazon.

Perfect
I was very pleased with my purchase. They are absolutely the real deal. The packaging on the outside of the box was a bit dusty, but it was very well sealed. The box itself and the contents were fine. I did regular shipping and it took about 2 weeks to get them. Besides for that I am a happy camper.P.S. I ate the worst sounding one, and it really wasn't all that bad. Only thing these are missing is pepper, but there is Tabasco. =(

Good way to sample an mre
I just recieved and sampled my first mre. It was the beef patty with cornbread stuffing. It also included an oatmeal cookie. a piece of bread, grape jelly, instant coffee, juice powder, sugar, coffe creamer powder, salt, pepper, napkin, spoon, wet wipe, and a heater. preperation was pretty simple. just tear open the heater bag and insert the food pouch. then add a bit of water to the line and it will start cooking. the beef patty was actually not bad. Reminded me of soft beef jerky. The cornbread stuffing was more of a paste but i wouldnt turn it away if i was hungry. Remember to add a bit more water between warming food pouches. The oatmeal cookie was actually really good and the bread was kind of like a soft cracker. Very dense. overall it was not the best meal i have ever had but it was not bad at all. I will be ordering a case of these for my emergency supply. its not gourmet by any means but the food has a lot of flavor and was decently filling.

Color me impressed
So I bought one of these to test it out to see if it was good enough to take camping.I got it, prepared it and was satisfied with the amount of food in the package. I got pork sausage patty and it was good, not good as in something you'd get at a restaurant but good as in better than-high-school-food and better than cooking-burgers-in-the-mountains.I finished almost everything except for the oatmeal cookie (pretty darn good by the way) and the peanut butter, because I was full by then. The MRE has plenty of calories so this is not the stuff you want to be eating at home, but those calories are more than welcome when I go camping. The only thing I disliked is that the pork sausage patty was too small for my liking, it was about 1 and a 1/2 inches wide by about 3 inches tall by about 1/4 inch thick. Pretty small if you ask me. It tasted good by the way. Also the whole package is pretty big so they will take up a lot of space...

OPENED!
I cannot attest for flavor or anything like that, but when I received my order (ordered two individual meals) one of my entrees were opened, then taped shut again. I am not sure if the product was removed from the box and replaced or what happened, but the box was clearly opened before then taped shut again. Not acceptable for something that might be used in emergency situation. Just be leary when you order!

These are NOT MREs
The title is misleading. While these are meals and are "ready to eat", the term "MRE" normally refers to a specific type of government-issue ration. These are somewhat good, but significantly inferior to "real" MREs. (It's been several years since I had "real" MREs; from what I understand, they are continuously improved upon. My last MREs dated from around 2002.)The meals I received consisted of a main course (some type of stew or pasta in sauce), dried fruit, mixed nuts, 4 lemon cookies, and drink mix. Also included was a heater pouch and a small accessory pack with spoon, napkin, salt, pepper, coffee, and sugar. They might have a wider selection of main dishes, but everything I received was stew or pasta.Give this to anyone who has eaten a real MRE, and they will immediately ask: "Where's the peanut butter?" - it's not here. Neither is the actual side dish present in most MREs, nor are the crackers. While food choices are going to be limited in any...

We actually divided the class into three groups, one group worked with me on grip and stance, another on shooting positions, and the last in the classroom practicing loading, unloading, trigger control and sight picture with A-Zoom snap caps and... All that work must of have built up an appetite, because as soon as everyone had been rotated through each station, the men headed out into the sunshine (sunshine is rare in this part of the state by the way) to soak up some rays and chow down on... Once the exercises were finished and the shooting qualifications completed, I took some of the soldiers out to the pistol bays to shoot my pink XDm (often referred to as “The Pink Gun of Shame”). Many of the guys probably heard me in their sleep that night… “More finger on the trigger,” “Less finger on the trigger”, “Front sight. The day started out with classroom instruction including the safety rules, nomenclature, cartridges, cartridge malfunctions and the how-to of loading and unloading. Each time I talked to a soldier he offered me some part of his MRE.   Three NRA-Certified Instructors (myself included) and two range safety officers donated their time to provide a full day of fun and learning for these troops.   They were just as serious about learning as we were about instructing – and if you’ve ever taught to a group of people on any subject matter, you know that that is a rare sight to see.   We split the men into groups again and went through a series of shooting exercises.   Once Gregg Smith finished his legal lecture (he actually keeps it pretty entertaining) it was time to have some fun.

This has led to MREs receiving such splendid nicknames as “Meals Rejected by Everyone”, “Meals, Rarely Edible”, and my personal favorite, “Three Lies for the Price of One” (it’s not a Meal, it’s not Ready, and you can’t Eat it). Their lack of... Improved food preservation and packaging techniques led to the MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) replacing canned food (then known as MCI, Meal, combat, individual rations) in 1981. An MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) is a lightweight, self-contained field ration used by military forces in situations where regular food preparation isn’t an option. While the military is always attempting to make MREs taste better and more appealing to soldiers- and it seems like they have had some success with this- any meal designed primarily for function and durability is probably going to be lacking... Modern MREs rely on food preparation and packaging technology to supply a meal that is safe to eat and can survive extreme conditions. To ensure that soldiers finished eating their meals, various kinds of meals were introduced.

At RIT, I became interested in applied microbiology, especially in the field of bioremediation and biofuels when I attended a research seminar presented by Dr. Jeffrey Lodge about utilizing algae as a biofuel source.
