The best on-camera flash available for Pentax dSLRs
I have a Pentax K-x and am waiting for the prices to drop to upgrade to a K-5. I was looking for the best of the best on-camera flash to capture unforgettable moments in low light or dark situations. This flash by all means completes this task.I was looking at both Metz and Pentax flashes and was drawn to the Metz because they specialize in developing flashes and most differentiating in the 58 AF-1 is the "A" function which means Automatic. It uses on board readings to judge the output of the flash instead of relying just on the camera via PTTL. While both modes work well, I find that Automatic is better. Another distinguishing point of this flash is the rotating main flash allowing me to bounce off an available wall or ceiling and when I shoot directly I implore the built-in diffuser until I decide to pick up a real one to attach to it. The secondary flash is great for filling in shadows in faces and overall just adds so much more usefulness. There is a USB port...

Nice Flash
Very nice flash, has some really nice features. Just starting to play with the strobe feature.As of yet have not played with the fill flash feature.I only have one issue with such a expensive flash. No dumb slave mode. Very strange theunit works great as a smart slave against my Pentax, but does not support just a dumbslave flash. Had to go out at by a slave trigger, then works great.Only down side.On the whole I would give this a 4.5 to 5 out of 5.

Very capable flash
I have a pentax 360FGZ which is very nice, but has no swivel capability. I also have a Sigma EF500 DG ST that is pwoerful, and works very well with a swivel, but little in the line of adjustability. This Metz 58AF-2 is very powerful, and bounces and swivels, and the adjustment to conditions is very detailed. It also supports all of my cameras features (K20D). And there is a secondary smaller flash that can be used to put a little sparkle on the subject, or cut down on shadows, and that too is adjustable. It can be used as a dumb slave, or wireless slave, or Master Slave. Wirelessly handling P-TTL. You can go P-TTL or manual, and this features it's own on flash Automatic mode wth 12 auto aperture settings. I just put my camera on AV which I prefer in many situations, and the flash on manual, and shoot. So far it has been very accurate. Of course in manual you can choose from many power settings. Excellent Flash
I used the Metz mecablitz 58 AF-2 side-by-side with the Pentax AF540FGZ for a couple of weeks (with my K-5).Which one is better? They are both excellent and the choice will come down to features vs usability.The Metz has more features, specifically: - The Metz has more manual power levels (25 steps, down to 1/256) The Pentax will go down to 1/64 in 7 steps which is fine for most situations but still slightly less flexible. - The Metz has a second, forward facing reflector. This offers the option providing a "fill flash" when bouncing the main reflector. - The Metz has a strobe mode; useful for stop-motion photos - The Metz has slightly tighter zoom rangeOn the Pentax side, you have a feature set which is still solid plus greater usability. Tons Of Power And Functionality, Not So Ergonomic
I had a chance to put this flash through its paces during the holiday season. I purchased the Pentax version to use on my K-5.My initial experiments showed amazing versatility. With everything this flash can do, it's by far the most useful accessory for my camera. Scenes can easily be made to look well-lit without the horrible "deer in the headlights" look of most built-in flashes. The power output allows this flash to be useful in many situations, even lighting up entire rooms with bounce flash. The wireless capabilities are plentiful, with full support for Pentax P-TTL wireless and even a very convenient "servo" mode. Thanks to this flash, Christmas parties resulted in some of the best keepers I've ever gotten in low-light situations.Build quality is... good. Nothing to brag about. Works for me (On my Mecablitz 50 AF-1 digital)!!
I always put one of these Omni-Bounces on my flash units and rarely take them off. Just bought the new Metz Mecablitz 50 AF-1 digital and this unit is a perfect fit to this flash as well as to the the 48 and 58 models. It fits snugly and extends the length of the flash unit exactly 3/4". The little flip over the lens diffuser that is incorporated into the Metz units just doesn't do the same job of spreading the light output that the Sto-Fen does. There were some reports that the use of a Sto-Fen on these Metz flashes resulted in confusing the i-TTL or Auto system resulting in a brighter flash up to an f/2 increase. I have never seen an Omni-bounce that did not result in an increase in measured light output as a function of how it handles the light discharge. I'm tickled with my Sto-Fen Metz combination!!

Does what its supposed to
This diffuser does its job but I dont like having to force it onto my $400.00 flashes. I would recommend using the diffusers that have alternative means to fasten to your flash that dont require forcing it onto the flash head.

Great flash unit
Good construction qualityEasy to use and work flawlessly in every mode with my K10D Pentax SLRHowever, wireless flash when use 58 AF in slave mode and use my K10D build-in flash unit as master flash sometime not work properly if I place the 58AF at the right side of my camera but work very well if I place it at the left side of cameraI love the secondary reflector as will recommend it to my friend as a substitute to the Pentax AF540FGZ unit
