Basis for a satisfying lunch or appetizers
This is really easy to use: a cup of the falafel mix, a cup of water, mix, wait 30 minutes and then fry or bake. The directions say to deep fry; however, we haven't done that -- just pan fry in some olive oil and flip like a burger. We've served it in pita bread with plain yogurt, cucumber and veggies and it is delicious, nutritious and filling.

Use less water than it calls for
Excellent falafel mix. Spicy, but not too spicy, and contains just fava beans and chickpeas while some other brands leave out the fava beans and add wheat flour. The instructions say add 1 cup water to 1 cup mix but that's too much water. 3/4 cup water is more reasonable. You can always add more water if it's too thick.

Pretty good
I've bought other falafel mixes and this one is decent, but not the best. Most mixes take about 15 minutes to thicken after water is added. This one takes at least 30 minutes. Even then, it might not be thick enough. I have broiled the falafels rather than deep frying, so the fact that they are "wetter" than most falafels is actually a good thing since they don't get dried out. The falafels do taste great.

Best Falafel Mix on the Market!! :)
I absolutely love falafel, and have tried a number of different falafel mixes, including Casbah, Ziyad, Swad, Nirav, and Manischewitz.Until I tried Casbah, I liked Ziyad brand the best. Ziyad cooks well and tastes good, but is not as flavorful as Casbah (which has a stronger flavor than any of the brands I mentioned).Swad and Nirav are good (they taste good but are less flavorful than Ziyad), but do not purchase the Manischewitz. It does not taste the way falafel is supposed to. The ingredients indicate that it is made with matzo meal, which is probably why it tastes so vastly different. It's not that it tastes bad, but it just doesn't taste like falafel. The packaging is nice... the mix is divided into two separate sealed pouches. Good for single people. Quantity wise it is less than the other brands, though.I have not tried Near East or Fantastic Foods brand falafel mix, so cannot comment on the quality of those mixes.Casbah...

Quick, easy, and delicious
This falafel kit has saved me many times. I always buy a few boxes and forget that I have it. Then, when I run out of groceries and I'm rifling through the cabinets for something tasty to eat, there it is! Falafel! Sometimes I eat it by itself, on a pita, or with crumbled spicy tofu.

Very good for wheat-free
When I was diagnosed with gluten sensitivity, I thought foods such as this would be off-limits. What a pleasant surprise to find Orgran making mixes like this. The falafel patties hold up well to cooking, and my daughter and I honestly could not taste much difference between this falafel and previous wheat falafels we used to have.

Delicious falafel mix!
We love the OrGran products. They are good quality. The problem with most boxed mixes is the sodium content. This brand is less salty tasting than the Fantastic Foods brand. OrGran makes these with yellow peas so they taste a little different from what we expected. There aren't any other beans in them which other falafel mixes usually include in the mix. These are a good gluten-free food choice for my son who is on a gfcf diet. Overall these are good and the kids enjoy them!

Customer Review

Delicious!
As a previous reviewer said, one box makes a lot of falafel. It tastes great leftover though. Mine kept well in the refrigerator for a week; I sealed it in some run-of-the-mill tupperware. The mix is mildly spiced, but I think it will appeal to most palates.A minor warning: I managed to fill my kitchen with smoke while making a batch using the broiling directions listed on the box. The instructions tell you to brush both sides of a falafel patty with olive oil and then broil them. This is all well and good, except olive oil has a very low smoke point. The falafel baked just fine for me, and it still tasted great. I made the rest of the batch using vegetable oil with no discernible difference in taste or texture. My broiler doesn't have "high" and "low" settings, so perhaps baking at a lower temperature would solve this problem.Really tasty - will definitely make again.

Falafel

They're a great substitute for chickpeas in falafel or hummus if you feel like changing things up, and I'm obsessed with them, so obviously that's what I like to use for my falafel. Falafel seems like something you should be able to make from cooked beans, but I've tried it before but ended up with a bunch of falafel patties dissolving into hot oil, which really just isn't the same. " You  definitely don't want your oil to smoke, but if you drop a tiny pinch of falafel mixture in there, you want it to sizzle and be surrounded by tiny bubbles. (If you're really committed to Falafel Realness, you can go for legit deep-frying and fill some kind of container with a ton of oil and use a thermometer and stuff to measure whether it's the correct temperature. When your oil is hot enough, put a few falafel in at a time, and let cook for 3-6 minutes on each side. It should also be at least 24 hours before you want to actually make your falafel. Most people know that falafel is great. Falafel salt to taste. SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THAT BEFORE MAKING FALAFEL, CHUMP. Trust me on this one, and you'll be living the high life, up to your eyeballs in falafel. Form your falafel mixture into roughly golf-sized balls. Just kidding, I made falafel with a mortar and pestle once because it was worth the effort. Mazel tov, you have some falafel. Also, although I'm an advocate of soaking and cooking dried beans in general because it's cheaper and you get better-tasting beans, this is an instance where soaking from dried is actually pretty necessary.

As we've gushed a few times before, Washington, D. C. 's Amsterdam Falafel will open soon in Davis Square, taking over Diva Lounge's digs. Earlier : Amsterdam Falafel Makes Plans for Davis Square. If you're hospitable to house guests and really love falafel, email them at info@falafelshop.

I also had guessed on the conversion between dried chickpeas and canned chickpeas, so perhaps that was it. I ended up pan-frying the remaining falafel disks in a non-stick skillet in just a bit of oil until they were slightly browned on each side... I know falafel is typically fried and this recipe called for frying, but I was hoping I could try some alternative cooking methods in addition to the deep frying. Add falafel balls, several at a time, flattening as you add them to the pan so they fit in the pita better.  I was totally bummed, and worried that I hadn’t gotten the oil hot enough, or perhaps it was the shape of the falafel — I’d flattened the balls into disks to fit in pitas better. I wanted to follow the recipe properly, so I went ahead and heated an inch or so of oil in a skillet, and dropped in about 6 small falafel disks, reserving the rest of the dough for other preparation methods. The fellas from The Bitten Word in D. C. experienced dissolved falafel, as did a blogger from Maine who the Bitten boys linked to. Vindication. Out of the ashes rose a pretty tasty falafel meal, with quite a few left over I enjoyed over salad greens. After about 8 minutes in the oil, the falafel fell apart completely.
