TiVo Premiere
I've been a TiVo owner since 2003 and this is their best TiVo to date. But it isn't perfect. It's a shame that the new HD user interface is still a work in progress. It is buggy and slow. You still have the option of using the old user interface, which is what I do. The processor in the TiVo Premiere is more powerful than the TiVo HD. But the extra processing power is mainly for the new user interface. It has the same recording abilities that the TiVo HD had with the exception of also supporting 1080p. It would have been nice if TiVo would have added a third tuner. Like the TiVo HD, the Premiere only supports cable TV and OTA antenna programming. The Premiere is almost an inch shorter than the HD and is more energy efficient. The main reason I bought the Premiere wasn't to upgrade from my existing TiVo HD, but I wanted another TiVo for the kid's playroom. If you already own a TiVo HD and you are looking to upgrade, you might want to save your money for the next TiVo series. If you...

Previously not eligible for Lifetime Service before May 19th, 2011. No parental controls in HD Menus
**** UPDATED: March 26th, 2012 ****1) After my original review was written I was contacted by TiVo executive customer service that wanted to offer me the chance to purchase Lifetime service on my new Premiere. But I'd already shipped it back to Amazon. I did get the name and number of the gentleman who contacted me though, who promised they would make good on the offer if I changed my mind in the future. At the time I was doing a number of major household renovations, but I did eventually buy a Premiere in March, 2011, and TiVo Executive service allowed me to purchase the Lifetime service. I was NOT allowed to transfer it from my old Tivo, but I was able to sell that unit so it was a decent deal.2) On May 19th, 2011, Tivo revised their Payment Plans policy to allow TiVo Lifetime service to be purchased on "retail" units for a $499 price-tag.3) I've been using the Premiere XL for just over a year now and it's a reliable unit, with all the usual TiVo...

Toshiba DVR DR430
Bought this DVR to enable me to transfer VCR tapes to DV. Although the manual does not specifically tell you how, it is really easy to figure it out. Play the VCR using AV cables into the front of the DVR and hit record. That is how easy it was. You do have to change the input to Front with the menu button. I have made many DV's with no problem and happy with it. I have also recorded TV shows directly from the Direct TV box via the S Video jack and the quality is superb!

Just what I needed!
I have 25 years of VHS tape of family events that I was worried might be deteriorating so I needed something to transfer them to DVD format. I read lots of reviews of various machines and finally settled on the Toshiba DR430. The low price was a big incentive. I am so glad I bought it. All I had to do was take it out of the box, connect it to my TV, connect the VCR to the Toshiba and I was on my way. No need to read the manual at all. Well, when it was done, I popped the first copy into another DVD player, I got nothing. No problem-I had not finalized it, which I found out when I called customer support (no manual reading for me!). He was very nice, directed me to the page in the manual, then waited while I followed the instructions to make sure I had no problems. It worked perfectly. The only thing that I would change is I would use DVD+RW discs instead of DVD+R so that I can edit the chapter names. I plan to buy some today. I brought the first copy to Thanksgiving and everyone...

DVD Recorder
I am very pleased with the performance of the Toshiba DR430 DVD Recorder. I learned that you have to finalize a disc whether it is formatted in Video or VR mode if you want to play it in other DVD players. The advantage of the VR mode is that you can go back and edit including "Undo Finalization". You can reformat in either mode. The manual is very helpful but I still had to go in the Internet to get answers. Adding titles to chapters is easy to do.Delivery was prompt and the product was well packaged.

BEST DVD Recorder for 2010
I have had this unit since may because one dept store had exclusive rights to sell it until late July, so after a few months...heres my review on this excellent DVD recorder with 350 GIG hard drive. For 2010, this is simply the BEST DVD Recorder you can buy. It has a massive 320 gig Hard drive, that gives you almost 400 hours on the lowest setting (which looks like a VCR recording) the next setting up looks very good and has almost 300 hours. You can record a tv show to the hard drive and keep it there, EASILY delete out commercials with the Edit feature, then save to a DVD or just keep it in the hard drive, I mean with 400 hours, its not like your gonna fill it up.The manual that comes with it at first seems daunting, but the best way to fig this unit out is just plug it in and play with it. It didn't take me long to figure it out. It was a easy 1 button record (otr) and a quick 1 button Dubbing (Hard drive to DVD or DVD to hard drive). Works much like a old...

Been waiting for this
Since the digital switch I have tried to get a digital recorder with a hard drive. I had an analog HDD/DVR and loved the convenience.Couldn't find a DVR (with digital tuner) for OTA programs, only cable. Got a recorder that used all kinds of disks. Sent it back. Hoped someone would make one with a HDD. I get TV through a rooftop antenna. Would not pay for TIVO or satellite but wanted the benefits.I'm very low tech and worried that I would have trouble with setup or programing. Recorder arrived last week. One call to customer support for clarification of installation. So simple to set up. Programing is SOO easy! Tech support was quick, polite, helpful and didn't have an accent. While it's recording you can watch a previously recorded HDD program, watch the currently recording show from the beginning and cut out commercials, watch a DVD or different TV channel while recordingI love this thing and am ordering another today for another TV.

Free of the stupid disks!
Although this DVD-R offers some advanced features, it is priced in the range of a casual user and this is a casual user review. There are some good "techie" reviews on Amazon but I don't do anything complicated with a DVD-R and this review is for anyone like me looking for a good, easy to use machine for recording TV and watching movies. In brief, I can say buy it! Here's why - I have gone through two cheaper DVDRs in the last 3 years because the disk insert/read functions of the machine wore out or hosed up. I started looking at this Magnavox initially because of the digital tuner. As the last surviving non-subscriber to cable and with only one TV having a digital tuner, I like having a digital tuner in the DVD-R so I don't have to mess with a rotten converter box on the analog TV. I record a lot of TV because I am often working when my shows are on and I hate commercials and the breaks in the show commercials cause. (I much prefer to record even shows I could watch on the...

Basically a DVR with a DVD Burner
Tired of paying almost $200 per month to my cable company, I decided to ditch one of my DVR's and replace it with an HDD DVD burner with digital tuner. After all, some programs deserve to be burned to DVD and kept "forever" rather than being recorded to a hard drive on a DVR unit that will eventually fail or be turned in. I purchased the Magnavox MDR515H from Amazon after visiting two local Best Buy stores. Neither carried any DVD burners. Bottom line, the popularity of these units is nowhere near VCR levels.I selected this item over the less expensive Magnavox MDR513H because this is a newer model and I figured Magnavox (Funai) addressed any issues they may have had with the MDR513H.After receiving the item, I set it up, auto programmed the channels, and learned the basic features in little time. This unit works and functions great, and it's fairly easy to use - especially if you've owned a DVD burner previously. Basically, it's a DVR with a DVD burner...

Great DVD recorder with hard drive
This recorder fits my needs perfectly and was exactly what I was looking for. I refuse to accept the business models of Tivo or the Satellite/cable company policy of renting these devices and paying a monthly fee. You can't own them outright! The Moxi is simply too expensive. I had this device hooked up in minutes and was recording to both DVD and the HDD in no time. The picture quality to HDD is excellent. It isn't HD but Standard Definition (SD) but I'm not using this machine to archive collectables. Just time record, watch once then erase. There are many options to connecting this device depending on your situation, i.e cable but no cable box, antennea only, satellite/cable box, etc... In my situation I simply had this unit connected to my Elite Pioneer AV receiver via the RCA audio/video input/outputs. I use an HDMI cable for playback to achieve the upconversion to 1080p. My Cox Digital Cable box is connected to my AV receiver. Note there is no HDMI Input. This is not an oversight...

Magnavox beats the old Toshiba
I have a Toshiba HDD recorder and was looking for another one at ebay. After bidding on several of them and losing because the bids went too high I learned of the Magnavox. I originally considered the 513 because it was cheaper and its 320 GB was large enough for me. Then I found out that the 515 is not just a larger hard drive, but has an improved remote and saves your settings for an hour in case of a power failure, unlike the 60 seconds of the 513. Now that I have this one I like it better than my Toshiba. Toshiba has chapter mute which allows you to instantly skip commercials, that the Magnavox does not, but in almost every other way the Magnavox is more convenient to use. Besides that, I made too many mistakes watching football with the instant skip and jump too far ahead when there was no clear mute between commercial and program. If I am recording a program with the Magnavox and want to start watching from the beginning all I have to do is press the play button and it...

NOT YOUR FATHER'S VCR!!
We bought this unit to supplement our TIVO which, because of its single tuner and inflexible program guide, has difficulty recording both cable-scrambled and unscrambled channels. The 640H is directly replacing a VCR that we used to record scrambled channels and, for the moment, will give us a second DVD player. This is our first experience with a DVD recorder and I suspect that, since we don't do home video or want the jukebox, we do not need many of the included features. One of the reasons we chose this particular unit is that it DOES NOT depend on either the TV Guide video input or a TIVO-like service but rather, has its own programming options very much like a VCR. Note, though, that for scrambled channels, both the cable box AND the unit timer need to be set.For us the DVR-640-H-S does the following:-Records cable-box scrambled channels directly into the unit's channel 3 and then onto the hard drive (HDD) or a DVD. Again, the...

I Love It!
I purchased this DVR a couple of months ago to replace my Sony DVR that could not be relied upon to time record. My purposes are pretty simple, just recording TV programs directly off the analog portion of my cable so I can't say that my usage has been anything involved. I haven't even recorded to the DVD yet, only to the HDD. But, my experience is that it's very easy to set the time recording, the time and counter display is easy to read, playback is simple, deleting is simple, and I like the fact that it fast forwards much easier than my Sony. It also has a nice large hard drive so I don't have to worry about running out of room. I love it so much that I'm even putting it on my Christmas list in hopes Santa will bring me a second one since I often like to record more than one program at a time. Good-bye VCR!There is a disclaimer on the Frontier website that this unit does not have a digital tuner so in 2009 when everything goes digital, it may not be able to record...

Missing 2 things from being perfect
I dont think the previous rating can be taken seriously, because shipping problems should not affect the product rating.Having owned 3 previous DVD recorders (Philips, Panasonic 100 and Pioneer 320), i was anxious to check out this product. To make a long story pretty short. This recorder is just about perfect, but missing 2 things.... if you need them.1) believe it or not.... this recorder does NOT have a DV in. Every cheap 90 dollar DVD recorder has it now, for some strange reason, Pioneer does not include it in this year's model.2) An HDMI out, if you need it. For a 400 Dollar model, you would assume, this is included for the 2006 model year. Now the good thing. This year, for the first time. Pioneer recorders finally do record on ANY media, even DVD+RW and DVD-RAM and Dual-Layers.Whats very unique on this recorder and not available anywhere else is the jukebox function, which lets you store several CD's on the...

Even better than I expected
Have used this recorder for three weeks now after the ol' VCR died and it works even better than I had hoped. The digital tuner can pick up all the "clear" local HDTV signals on Cablevision's cable system so now (using a simple splitter) I can record one show at 480p using the DVD while watching another in full HD either via the TV's tuner or via the cable box. Or record any of remaining channels non-clear channels using the cable box's S-Video out (the best you can use as external recording input source). The quality of the resulting tuner recordings (in 2 hour SP mode) is almost as good as the original as seen on a 720p TV (and I am very picky in that respect), and it is certainly far better than the VCR side. Plus, the DVD-RW discs are of course re-usable via an erase (or format, as Toshiba calls it). Recording is almost one-touch; really very convenient. I can't see any reason to record anything on a VHS tape again. This box is a great alternative to the monthly fee for a HD...

The functionality of multiple A/V components in one compact unit: the D-VR670 from Toshiba. While the combination of a DVD player and a VCR gives you the ability to enjoy audio and video from a variety of sources, bi-direction dubbing lets you transfer video from DVD to VHS, or vice versa. Integrated digital and analog tuners allow you to receive over-the-air television content without a separate converter box, and when combined with DVD-recording capabilities, make it possible to record TV programming to DVD. Use the D-VR670's video-upscaling technology to enhance standard-definition DVD video to near-HD 1080p levels. Top to learn more

Sleek & Nice for the Price. Complicated Owner's Manual.
I purchased this unit to replace a 15 year old PROSCAN VCR which was eating my VHS tapes. Before I selected this unit, I read all of the INVALUABLE reviews of VCR/DVD machines on this web site and I'm glad I did. If you have not purchased VCR and/or DVD replacement equipment in a while, there are a number of considerations you need to be aware of.First, if you want to go from your antenna line-in and/or your cable line-in directly to the back of the VRC/DVD unit to record OTA or cable programs while watching other programs on your TV, then you need a VCR/DVD unit with a tuner. Not all units listed have tuners; this one does. A tunerless unit will require a more complicated hookup and you can only record what you are watching.Next, there is the issue of analog versus digital equipment. Be sure to pay attention to the statements posted about analog equipment. Also, pay attention to the measurements to be sure the unit you purchase will fit wherever you wish to...

Record 1 DTV Channel while watching another DTV Channel
The Toshiba DVR 670 is virtually the same as its predecessor the DVR 660. The major difference being that you have to flip down a panel on the front of the unit to access the VCR/DVD buttons whereas on the DVR 660 these are on the outside. The DVR 670 is one of the few VCR/DVD combos on the market that allow you to record Off The Air Digital broadcasts on VHS tape. While the quality of HDTV programs on VHS tape is inferior to DVD, it's a quicker, easier, and cheaper way to make recordings if you just want a temporary recording of a TV program you don't want to miss, plus you save money in not having to pay monthly fees for a DVR service. The Toshiba DVR 670 VCR/DVD combo has a Digital tuner so you can record Off The Air OTA channels with it. If you want to make quick recordings of HDTV and don't care about high image quality you can easily use VHS tapes and reuse them to record over...
