DDT's fresh new album Inache (Otherwise)
3 years after the Ne strelyay (Don't Shoot!) compilation, DDT band, with the renewed composition of musicians, has finally released a much anticipated album called Inache (Otherwise). Most of the songs have never been published before and will surely surprise the audience with the freshness of sound. The songs have been recorded in the London Metropolis studio under the guidance of eminent Mazen Murad. The new album contains a good mix of soft, melodious, powerful and energetic songs and the style is very typical of the DDT style. Yuri Shevchuk's lyrics are deep and philosophical and cover a wide range of topics from politics, patriotism and freedom to tolerance and the imminent lightness of being. I particularly like the songs Rodivshimsya etoj noch'yu (Born this Night), Novaya Rossiya (New Russia), and Pesnya o vremeni (The Song about Time).Overall, this album is very original: it shows a continuous evolution of DDT's sound and provides a good reflection on...

Product Description

No single event played a greater role in the birth of modern environmentalism than the publication of Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" and its assault on insecticides. This collection of documents, the first of its kind, traces shifting attitudes toward DDT and pesticides in general through a variety of sources: excerpts from scientific studies and government reports, advertisements from industry journals, articles from popular magazines, and the famous "Fable for Tomorrow" from "Silent Spring".Beginning with attitudes toward nature at the turn of the twentieth century, the book moves through the use and early regulation of pesticides; the introduction and early success of DDT; the discovery of its environmental effects; and the uproar over "Silent Spring". It ends with recent debates about DDT as a potential solution to malaria in Africa. These texts allow readers to see how scientists, pesticide manufacturers, conservationists, and ordinary citizens approached this issue and how profoundly their attitudes changed from the 1890s to the present. Thomas Dunlap is professor of history at Texas A & M University. He is the author of four books including "Faith in Nature: Environmentalism as Religious Quest" and "DDT: Scientists, Citizens, and Public Policy". Top to learn more

Product Description

Praised for its ability to kill insects effectively and cheaply and reviled as an ecological hazard, DDT continues to engender passion across the political spectrum as one of the world's most controversial chemical pesticides. In DDT and the American Century, David Kinkela chronicles the use of DDT around the world from 1941 to the present with a particular focus on the United States, which has played a critical role in encouraging the global use of the pesticide.

The banning of DDT in the United States in 1972 is generally regarded as a signal triumph for the American environmental movement. Yet DDT's function as a tool of U.S. foreign policy and its use in international development projects designed to solve problems of disease and famine made it an integral component of the so-called American Century. The varying ways in which scientists, philanthropic foundations, corporations, national governments, and transnational institutions assessed and adjudicated the balance of risks and benefits of DDT within and beyond America's borders, Kinkela argues, demonstrates the gap that existed between global and U.S. perspectives on DDT. DDT and the American Century offers a unique approach to understanding modern environmentalism in a global context.

A2002 report published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on fraud in science in Germany stated the International Scientific Misconduct Rules should punish deliberate or grossly negligent falsification or fabrication... The chemical compount that has saved more human lives than any other in history, DDT, was banned by order of one man, the head of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). DDT has been effective in controlling mankinds worst insect pests, including lice, fleas, and mosquitoes. In 1802, French troops arrived there but departed after 29,000 of the 33,000 soldiers died of yellow fever. It infected British troops in the Louisiana Territory in 1741, killing 20,000 of the 27,000 soldiers. The most common examples of fraud in the United States appear to be environmental, including acid rain, ozone holes, carbon dioxide, ultraviolet radiation, global cooling, global warming, endangered species, and pesticides. This was of enormous importance for human health because at least 80 percent of human infectious disease worldwide is arthropod borne. This article will primarily concern the last, especially DDT.

Analysis of 50 years' bird droppings inside a large decommissioned chimney on Queen's campus, provided evidence that DDT and bird diet may have played a role, in a long-term decline for populations of insect-eating birds in North America. "Certainly there are many other deposits in large chimneys around North America and elsewhere, forming important environmental time capsules," says biology professor and co-author John P. Smol, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change , and...

The poems in “Refinery” center around the author’s growing up in south Texas: Halloween, the baseball nights and DDT of the title, Southern Baptist churchgoing, segregation, living in a refinery town. The last section, “The Sound of One Hand,” consists of poems about Emmons’ father and their complex relationship and the whole book is dedicated to her father, Winfred S. Emmons, who passed in 2000. Other than providing me a deeper knowledge of the poet, which helps in placing the poet in relation to some of the subject matter of the poems, I do not think it colors my judgement of the poems in the slightest.

Mr Clifton was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy last year, a condition medical experts have attributed to exposure to large amounts of a poison such as DDT. Mr Clifton spoke out in the media against NSW Police because of its refusal to compensate him for medical conditions he incurred from handling DDT. ” Mr Yates voiced concern that Mr Clifton and Senior Constable Bob Deards were not tested for radioactive or other poisoning even though they had suffered for days after the incident. One of those officers, Senior Constable Terry Clifton, remembers being “absolutely soaked” in the now banned pesticide DDT as he helped bury the powdered substance on the roadside of the Pacific Highway. “I took two years off and then tried to get back into the police force in 1982, but the police doctor gave evidence that I was not suitable as a result of the accident,” he said. Mr Clifton was highly regarded in the force before the accident, awarded service medals and certificates of excellence over the years. Now retired, the 61-year-old says his involvement with the clean-up of the fatal accident lead to his forced exit from the police force.
